ETFs Defined
| |
Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) are growing in popularity as a method of investing in the stock market, providing the opportunity for investors to diversify their stock market portfolios while maintaining flexibility in trading that is similar to stocks.
An Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) is a security that trades on a stock exchange and generally tracks the performance of an index. It is a single stock representing a portfolio of securities underlying the index which can be comprised of stocks, bonds and other assets such as commodities. The simplest ETFs generally seek to replicate an index. However, ETFs have evolved over recent years to allow for exposure to alternative asset classes including commodities and the implementation of more sophisticated investment strategies. An ETF generally offers a lower volatility to a single stock within a stock exchange. |

Types of ETFs

There are a variety of types of Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) that provide investors an opportunity to develop a diversified investment portfolio with a stock exchange. ETF sponsors are constantly adding to the types of ETFs available, providing investors with more choice. Many ETFs track the performance of an underlying index or benchmark. The underlying index or benchmark may be broad, or sector-specific, or be linked to other assets like commodities or currencies.
ETFs can be grouped into different types of ETFs, which may include: |

| Index ETFs |

| ETFs that use an index tracking approach generally follow a pre-selected index, called a benchmark, and the return on the ETF will closely correlate with that of the underlying index. Index ETFs follow a variety of indices, including the broad market, sectors such as energy or health care, and commodities (including oil and gold), as well as indices that offer exposure to dividends or fixed income. The weightings used in the underlying index could be based on market capitalization of the constituents or on fundamental factors such as financial criteria. Index ETFs may also follow indices that adhere to a certain investment style, such as value or growth. |

The Evolution of The ETF in Canada
| |
| Canada is a world leader in the development of the Exchange traded Fund or ETF. The creation of the modern ETF has roots on Toronto Stock Exchange with a security called TIPS; short for Toronto 35 Index Participation Units. This investment product allowed investors to participate in the performance of the TSE 35 Composite Index without having to buy shares of each constituent company in the index. TIPS was followed by HIPS, a participation unit for the Toronto 100 index. These early ETFs have since been replaced by a wide variety of ETFs offered by a number of providers. |
